Steam: The end of used video games?

Tagged:

Recently I wrote up a rant about how Valve's latest game Left 4 Dead should have only been released as a multiplayer game since in my opinion the single player aspect was extremely boring and repetitive. As I usually do with games that don't appeal to me, I immediately posted it up on Amazon as used and within twenty-four hours had already sold and shipped it out to the buyer for almost the same price I paid for it. Normally that is where the story would end, but this time around I got fucked royally, and not buy the online transaction, but by Steam.

A few days later the buyer contacted me that he had installed the game but was unable to play it do to a "duplicate cd key" error. He had contacted Valve's Steam support about the issue and they had replied with the following:

We do not reset CD keys from auction sites or in cases in which the game has been resold by another individual.

The buying, selling or trading of Steam accounts/CD keys is a violation of the Steam Subscriber Agreement.

I recommend you return the game and inquire about a refund.

Songbird 1.0 Fedora RPMs have landed!

The time has finally come, Songbird 1.0 Fedora RPMs are now available! I know some of you have been very anxious to get your hands on these, so please enjoy. The kick ass dev's over at POTI have been working towards this for a very long time and it's great to finally see such a major milestone reached. For everyone out there that has been itching to get these packages, keep in mind that I do this on my own free time and separate from POTI's own internal build system. All of my packages are built from Songbird source with Fedora's official Koji build system, so often I have to debug issues and patch some scripts where necessary. If it were as simple as shitting out an RPM every release cycle I'd be more than happy to. :)

So, without further ado, here are the packages! Some words of wisdom though: Songbird now relies heavily on gstreamer in order give proper playback. This means that you will need gstreamer along with it's full compliment of gstreamer-plugins-good, bad, and ugly in order to handle your audio files. I cannot set these as package requirements since "bad" and "ugly" are not allowed to be distributed with Fedora due to copyright issues.

Left 4 Dead: Awesome Co-op - Horrible Everything Else

Left 4 Dead At this very moment thousands of ignorant little Valve slaves are flocking to pick up the newest zombie horror game to hit the market--Left 4 Dead. Little do they know that they are about to get home and promptly shout a blood curdling WTF after playing the first chapter of the game. I'm not even going to try and fluff around the edges with this one. It sucks, it's boring, it's repetitive, it looks six years out of date, and it's little more than a bunch of multiplayer maps that can be played in single player. In fact, that's the game's only redeeming quality whatsoever. I'm not going to lie, I had huge expectations for this game, but the reality is a complete joke.

Yesterday like many other slaves to the market, I trudged over to the local Gamestop to pick up my reserved copy of Left 4 Dead. On the way home I was extremely pumped... partially from my recent Fallout 3 high, but also because I knew this was going to be some quality zombie killing action. Holy shit, was I completely wrong! After an hour I was already itching to turn the game off and after two I completely stopped taking the game seriously and started to just wander into zombies in order to let my teammates save me for fun.

Fallout 3: Ten Years in the Making

Fallout 3 What hasn't already been said? No need for a long strung out rant, or even a huge article praising Bethesda. Fallout 3 is here, it kicks mutant ass, and you've probably already read all that there is on every aspect of the game. Honestly, I'm kind of glad that it took this long too. If we had received what was originally promised as Fallout 3 from Interplay and Black Isle (codenamed Van Buren), I'm not sure it would have been nearly as good--if Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel of was anything to go by. I played the unfinished tech demo they released and it seemed like their heart was in the right place, but it was cartoony and exactly Fallout 2 forced into a 3D world. Bethesda just has a knack for immersion and great art direction, so what we see here is more of a reinvention of the series, rather than a true sequel.

Gojira: The Way of All Flesh - A Decade of Crushing

Gojira - The Way of All Flesh Honestly, I don't even know where to start with these guys. There's only so much fucking awesomeness that I can wrap my head around in one sitting. This quick review is meant to focus on Gojira's latest release, The Way of All Flesh, but I can't resist talking about their back catalog. Somehow I completely missed this French act for the last decade and I'm kicking myself for it now. Thanks to a good friend, I was set straight a couple of months back and now I can bring to you my totally biased opinion of this new cd and how it will change your life... or your co-workers. You will be completely addicted and everyone will hate you for it, Gojira crushes like no other.
