Straight to the point: GAMEFLY SUCKS
I've been holding off on venting my frustration for the last couple of months now, but I've finally had it with Gamefly, the self-touting "#1 online video game rental service." It's really a shame that they choose to run their business in such a shoddy manor, because with no real competition around (except for maybe Blockbuster) they could easily be as big as Netflix. Yet, time and time again they prove to be 100% deserving of a ride on the FAIL boat.
Having been a long time customer of Netflix, I've come accustomed to a huge selection, extremely fast turn around time, and hassle free issue handling. Naturally, when I decided to try out Gamefly six months ago I took for granted that I would be receiving the same level of service. Holy shit was I in for a surprise!
First off, let's compare the rental plans. I'm currently signed up for the three DVD plan with Netflix for $16.99 and the single game rental plan with Gamefly for $15.95. Understandably, games cost three times as much as a DVD, so the cost was one thing I wasn't too concerned about. The queue system also seemed to be the same, so I went down my list of wanted games, ranked them accordingly and ended up with about ten games queued with some exploratory fillers at the bottom. From there everything started to go downhill FAST.
The first game they shipped was not my first pick, or my second, or even my third, it was my FIFTH game in the queue. As soon as I received the notification I double checked the queue to make sure it wasn't ordered differently than I remembered. Nope, it was exactly as I thought. Ok, so what about availability? One game was listed as "Low", one was listed as "Medium", and the rest were "High". In fact, there were two games listed as highly available above the one that they sent. Huh?
Ok, so what about shipping time? Well that first game arrived on the third day after they sent me notification. Not horrible, but not great either... yet I guess I can live with it.
After a week I was ready to return it, so I threw it back in the mailbox and the game was on it's way, but here is where I started to really be suspicious of the level of service Gamefly claims to offer and what they actual provide. You see, Gamefly advertise their "FastReturn" service likes it's the second coming of Christ. The theory goes that when USPS receives your game it is scanned and Gamefly is instantly notified, so you don't have to wait for it to return to the distribution center. In this way they can send the next game out on your queue and reduce turn around time. Well frankly, THE SERVICE DOESN'T FUCKING WORK. Not once have I sent a game back and had any notification until the game actually shows up three days later at Gamefly. Even worse, when the game does show up there is sometimes a two or three day lag time before they send out the next game! WTF!?!
*Grumble*Grumble* Ok, so at this point I'm starting to get angry. Not only does Netflix instantly ship the second they get your return, but they still manage to ship things almost always in order from your queue regardless of availability, and when they can't they ship you an extra DVD from a different distribution center free of charge!
Now that my first game is returned, I'm going to receive one of the games that was skipped right? NOPE. Sorry buddy, you lose! Once again they ship the fifth game in my queue. I send that one back, and the next game? The fourth game in my queue! ARRRG!!!! I was so pissed I contacted their customer service group and inquired as to why the fuck their system is so screwed. Here's the response:
Thank you for your inquiry. We have reviewed your account and confirmed that your top choice was not available upon shipping, and thus we sent you the first available game in your GameQ to minimize the time you are without one. Please note the availability statuses on the Web site reflect inventory across all of our warehouses. Therefore, while the game may be "Available Now” or “High" according to your Q, it may only be available in the warehouse that is more distant from your residence.
So tell me, what is wrong with this paragraph? DON'T MARK GAMES AS AVAILABLE IF THEY ARE NOT. Is this seriously a hard concept to understand? Or, if you're going to show availability from all warehouses, FUCKING SHIP from all warehouses. You can't list inventory to be used that's not accessible... then it's not usable inventory! They continue with this lovely bit:
We understand that our members want both their first choice and rapid shipping. While we try to meet these expectations every time, exceptions occur when the top ranked item is not available.
Top ranked item? How about top FIVE? I wouldn't even care if it was my second or third, but what the hell is this, fifth and below listed as "High" is apparently more interesting as my third choice listed the same way. Finally, here is the clincher and when I finally ended my conversation with them:
If you would like to receive a specific title we recommend that you empty your queue in order to have a higher chance of receiving the specific game.
Well doesn't that just figure. In so many words I've just been told "Yeah, our queue is useless. Only pick one game at a time or you'll never get what you want." SUCK IT GAMEFLY. You seriously need to take some queue pointers from Netflix and revise your algorithm.
So back to the price for play that you actually get out of your subscription. Unlike Netflix where even with a three DVD plan I can end up watching 20 movies in a month with their quick turn around (totally justifying the price in my opinion), you end up wasting so much time with Gamefly that the cost is ridiculous. Let's say there are thirty days in a month and I only keep the games a week, with the current turn around time of three days out, two to three days at the warehouse, and three days back, I can only play two games a month. That's also assuming that the games I get are actually the ones I want! AND to make it worse, that's also assuming the games are available!!!! You're getting screwed and might as well pay five bucks at your local Blockbuster to rent them.
So what finally brought me to this rant? Well it's the whole "availability" issue that I touched on. You see, as of May I played through most of the games that were already out and I was interested in. So, two weeks ago I queued up three upcoming PS3 games that were supposed to be decent and sent back my current game. Since then, inFamous, Prototype, and Ghostbusters have all been release, and which one did I receive. NOT ONE. All three gradually came out, started as "High", eventually ended up as "Low", and now two weeks later I still haven't received a single game! WHAT AM I PAYING FOR!? I didn't expect to receive all three right away, but I would have thought that by having all three on their I would be getting at least one freaking game. But no, nothing, and each time I look at the damn queue I get the annoying little message that I have no titles out so I should add more items to my queue! How about FUCK YOU Gamefly and send me one of the three already listed! Douchebags.
As soon as the games do eventually get here I'm cancelling my account and going back to local rentals. This service has been nothing but a pain in the ass from day one, let alone even attempting to get a new game to play. I feel like I'm luck too compared to some of the other stories I've read. A quick Google of "Gamefly sucks" will bring you all kinds of great stories about missing deliveries, ghost shipments, and people getting charged for returning games that mysteriously show up empty at the warehouse... not to mention all the same problems I just listed. Somehow I think that most of the employees have a warehouse of "missing games" at their homes.
Gamefly sucks, and I predict a swift death in the future. Apparently they've been expanding but every person I talk to says their service has actually been getting worse, so good luck with that! In my opinion, just cancel now and make it quicker.

I understand your frustration
I understand your frustration with game but let me bring you an even more frustrating situation of using gamefly and fast return. i have had service for about a year. in this time i have received about 30 games for rental. of the 30 games 3 have shipped using fast return. why i'm pissed is why only 3 games out of 30. you try emailing gamefly they give you a runaround that the usps dosen't have abillity to scan everywhere yet.....What??? if they do not have abillity to scan that would be one thing but obviously my post office has the abillity and has scanned the gamefly mailers before. so i contact usps customer service and they tell me to contact gamefly customer service witch is just another run around. so this leaves 2 problems with this service, either usps isn't bothering to scan em or game fly is not bothering to check scans. either way this a bad service that costs more for us in long run. gamefly should either begin to pay attention more or drop usps and pick up a new carrier such as UPS or FedEX which are sure to scan the items. another thing since the advertisement say it is a partneship with usps couldn't they partner with gamestop toy's r Us or other retailers to scan the items in like blockbuster does with videos at there stores.
How's this for a corker? I
How's this for a corker?
I was in the process of canceling my service, since I'm currently halfway through the ten day trial period and I've yet to receive a single game. I live in New Mexico. That aint too far from their Texas shipping center all things considered, so this ridiculous waiting period is straight-up nonsensical bullshit, but I digress.
Anyway, I'm in the process of canceling my service, and on the third page of several wherein Gamefly does its best to beg you to stay, Gamefly hits me with the offer of a pretty hefty discount for my first month of service. It'd go down 8 bucks from 23 to 15, so I'm thinking "Why not try it?" The way I figured it, I still had four days left of my free trial. If the games showed up in the next couple of days, I might have been able to justify paying 15 bucks to rent a couple of games for a month after all. So I accepted. That's when the shit hit the fan.
See, Gamefly didn't disclose that in accepting the offer, they'd just go ahead and sign me up for a pre-paid month of service and charge my card for it right then and there. They just went ahead and did it without giving me the opportunity to opt out.
I e-mailed the fuckers and asked them rather politely to give me my money back and cancel my account for all eternity. They'd best comply, or the next step is an e-mail to my Attorney General. I'm tired of shyster fucks like this trying to screw folks out of their hard-earned cash. They'll do the right thing or they'll suffer the consequences.
Anyway, yeah. Gamefly can choke on a bag of dicks.
dude i get pissed at them
dude i get pissed at them sometimes too but jesus christ calm the fuck down ur either in a bad area or sumthin but there not that fuckin bad and there better than renting 1 fuckin game at amovie gallery for $8 fuckin dollars
Yeah, we have had them for
Yeah, we have had them for about 3 months now, before Christmas it was half way decent, but I imagine a lot of people signed up or got a subscription for x mas because now we can't even get a game.
Before x mas the fast return worked. We ask the lady at the post office to scan directly in front of us and when we got home, it was on the gamefly page.
but now we still do that and we don't get any notice from gamefly until it actually shows up. Worse off, I mailed a birthday card to someone the same day and in the same state as the distribution center near us. My friend got his card in 2 days, Gamefly claims they didn't get their game for 5 days.
Even when they finally admit they got the game, they tell us that nothing in our que is available and they wait a few days to send us a game.
Let's be clear. I have 30 PS3 Games, 20 Wii games and at least 15 DS games in my que. So out of 65 games that all list as available on their site, we get none. When we do get one, it's usually past 30th on our list.
Gamefly will not be getting my money next month.
Yep, I'm with you guys. I
Yep, I'm with you guys. I sent 2 netflix and 1 gamefly out a the same time. Netflix received the movies the next day and shipped a movie the same day, but gamefly took 48 hours, and it's been 24 hours since they received it and still have not shipped anything.
Oh, and "fast return" has NEVER worked for me and I live in Austin which is just a few minutes from their distro center. I am literally MINUTES from their center.
I've tried talking to them about it and it's always the same load of crap: we will ship the next available game. The problem is that they have some jack ass fat tard sitting around fondling his balls and eating oreos all day instead of packaging up customer's games and getting them sent out.
Gamefly DOES NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU OR YOUR SATISFACTION.
I'm so glad I have a place to
I'm so glad I have a place to share my feelings.
I'm in the same boat as "why so serious". I started this service on October 14, 2009 and the first game was shipped the day I signed up and received three days later. I would send a game back, they'd receive it, and then send me another game the same day or the next day. Not necessarily number 1 in the queue, but decently high up.
In November, I guess I've been a member long enough to get shafted. Mid-month, I get #16 on my queue. No reasoning. Bioshock was #2 and was listed as "Available Now". Okay... at least I enjoyed #16 far more than expected.
Christmas time... I move up to a 2 game plan because I'll have some more free time and I wanted to be able to get a game to play with my brother as well. I get lucky and get #1 and #6 on my queue. Play them for a few days and decide to send them back. Granted, it is the holidays, but they take OVER A WEEK from the time they received my game to the time they sent my next one. Yes, my #1 was Low. My #2 was Medium. But #4-5 were High. So I go 2 weeks with no games paying $22/month. Ridiculous. But it's the holidays... I'll let it slide.
So I finished those games. Returned one a week and a half ago - they received it last Friday. Purchased the other one on Saturday night. I've already received the case and the game booklet. They shipped from Pennsylvania at 1:30 on Monday (I'm in Florida) and it came in the mail today... on Wednesday. I still have the message that no games are being sent to me yet. Currently, #1 Medium, #2 Low, #3 High, #4 Avail Now, #5 High...etc.
My buddy that signed up around the same time as me is having similar issues. We live in Florida. Our closest shipping depo is 200 mi away. Then Penn, then Texas, and finally, Cali. He gets the LOWEST item on his queue (of 15-20 games) and it's sent from California. He had many High and Avail Now titles and he gets the last item on his list from the most distant depo.
We've both contacted them regarding our issues and despite the differences in our complaints, got the same exact response about how we should add more items to our queues... how Available Now means that it may be available in another location but not ours (his game came from the one farthest away!), and otherwise the same BS that the OP stated.
Once my month is over, I'm canceling. I'll get the GamePass from Blockbuster where at least I can really SEE if the game I want is available and decide to hold on to my current if not. I pay $22/month to wait 2+ weeks every time I want a new game? No thanks. GamePass will at least allow me to have a game throughout the whole month and the trial month is only $15 -- same as I'd pay for 1 game from GF. I'd rather buy new games and sell them to Gamestop when I'm done at this rate... ugh!
I know some people have had
I know some people have had problems with gamely, i didn't however know it was this bad till i read this page. I've had gamefly for well over a year and i've managed to get almost every new release, the week of release for ps3, also never had any shipping problems. the best advice i can share with anyone is keep your queue clean, only put in the game(s) you want next and have open queue slots for, also make sure you have a slot available the day a game is released, that's all i've been doing and i always revered gamefly for doing the impossible by sending me so many new releases on time.
looks like the Gamefly PR
looks like the Gamefly PR Dept actually *does* know it has major.fucking.problems. At least enough to send a stooge out to put thier 2 cents into the comments. Now if only they would do something about the actual problems...
^ lol dude, i'm not from
^ lol dude, i'm not from gamefly, i came here from reddit, just giving my 2 cents if it helps anyone that still uses gamefly. i like the service, never had problems, forgive me for not taking the same tone as everyone else here
a) Only add the game you want
a) Only add the game you want to your queue. This is easy enough. You'll get it as soon as it's available.
b) Put games you actually want to play on your queue so the choice is a 'happy surprize'
c) Bitch about it on your blog
I have the same problems as
I have the same problems as you and Gamefly sucks ass. Know what's even better then waiting 2 weeks for a game to come? A game that comes broken and another 2 weeks wait. I grew up with Blockbuster and it's still the best lol
