Fedora Songbird RPM's: Now for the PowerPC!

Following up on my continuing work building Songbird for Fedora, PowerPC RPMs are now available. The initial builds needed a bit of massaging, so I focused on x86 until I was happy with how they turned out, but now it's time to complete the project. Since Fedora now officially supports ppc and ppc64 installs, it seemed only right to try and make this sexy bird run on the bastard child that is Linux on Mac. Besides, OS X is essentially a polished BSD/Linux variant anyways... so how hard could it be if the Songbird dev's have already conquered that hurdle? Not bad at all, as it turned out, but a sledgehammer did come in handy a few times. |
So, without further ado, here they are. I've included all of the links for quick reference to those that are looking for non-ppc builds. By the way, you can track our Fedora-extras inclusion process over at Bug #453422. These links are also listed over at the Songbird Contributed Builds wiki page. Thanks to all the help from the Songbird team, especially stevel. You guys kick some serious ass!

Songbird, on PPC Linux?
Songbird, on PPC Linux? Fantastic! I have been trying all day to get it compiled myself (and still haven't, as of yet...)
I'll try to make an Ubuntu PPC Songbird package then. Any hints? I figured out I had to change the configure file to enable powerpc architecture, but what else?
Keep up the good work!

Please post a link if you were successful building an Ubuntu package.
There are already Ubuntu
There are already Ubuntu deb's being built at getdeb.net. Here's the link:

Thanks, but PowerPC builds?

I run Ubuntu on an older powerbook G4.
Ah, good point. I didn't
Ah, good point. I didn't realize you were looking for PPC at first. I know for a fact it builds on PPC, since I've already done it with Fedora. The best advice I can give you is to get the source and diff from getdeb and attempt to rebuild their package on your PPC arch. Good luck.
Cool to hear someone else is
Cool to hear someone else is continuing to spread songbird! :) Actually, check out this bug:

That's the upstreamed patch I gave them for the linux-ppc config statements. Honestly, that's all it needed since the internal builds (such as mozilla) already compile on ppc. Of course, there might be one or two snags that are different in Ubuntu.
Feel free to send me an email if you get stuck in the build process. Take a look at the Fedora 9 spec file link above if you need some hints.
