Fedora Songbird RPM's
![]() |
As promised, here are some preliminary Fedora Songbird 0.6 RPM's. Note that I say preliminary, because they're not much more than a packaged binary at this point. The guys over at the Songbird Nest are nice enough to release pre-built binaries that are ready to go, I just packaged the current release into RPM format. Of course, that doesn't mean they're going to stay that way! |
I'm currently working on a source local build that will hopefully finish without any issues. If all goes well I'm going to attempt to get the final product into Fedora itself. We'll see... I don't like the idea of packaging pre-built libraries, but I need more time to make a proper Songbird build on multiple Fedora architectures. Anyways, here they are. You should have no problems installing them on Fedora 9. I haven't tried older releases (they might work on 8), but it really depends on the version of gstreamer. I have both the i386 and x86_64 versions. Please let me know if you experience any issues with either.
UPDATE 8/27/08: The Songbird rpms have now been updated to the 0.7.0 release! You can find them over here in a more recent post.
UPDATE 6/29/08: Both Songbird packages are now bumped to 0.6.1 and built completely from source during the packaging process. I am working hard to closely follow the Fedora packaging guidelines so that these rpm's can be submitted for review in the Fedora-extras repository. This means that mp3 support is not supplied or required by default. However, enabling this on your Fedora machine is very simple and usually only requires the gstreamer-plugins-ugly package. As always, feedback is appreciated!
Packaged From Source:
Songbird 0.6.1 - Fedora 9 - i386
Songbird 0.6.1 - Fedora 9 - x86_64
Old Packaged Binaries:
Songbird 0.6 for Fedora i386/i686
Songbird 0.6 for Fedora x86_64

...and this is invalid because? I actually used the OpenSolaris spec file as a reference for the Fedora build, which was written by alfred.peng@sun.com. See here, line 151:
http://pkgbuild.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pkgbuild/spec-files-extra/tru...
I see no problems with Sun's implementation and it was great to have a starting point.
If that is your "best" criticism I'm not particularly worried about the quality of the spec file. Actually, I think the spec file is pretty decent and I haven't heard much criticism as of yet... besides your comment. I've heard little in the way of spec file issues from Fedora, but I'd gladly change anything that is necessary.
Of course, if you are the "authority" on the subject than speak up, but you haven't even left an email address.

Unfortunately, it can't. The xulrunner that the Songbird team uses is heavily patched and is required for Songbird to run properly. I've been back and forth with the developers about this multiple times. They're trying upstream as many as the changes as possible, but it is still required.
